Green Hills Software Announces INTEGRITY® RTOS Support For New Motorola PowerQUICC™ III Communications Processor Family

Royalty-Free, Memory Protected INTEGRITY To Support E500-based MPC8540 and MPC8560 Processors

Dallas, SMART NETWORKS DEVELOPER FORUM, March 24, 2003 -- Green Hills Software, Inc., the leader in embedded technology, today announced plans to support Motorola's PowerQUICC™ III family of processors with its INTEGRITY® real-time operating system (RTOS). Green Hills Software already provides PowerQUICC III support through its MULTI® IDE and C/C++ optimizing compilers and the addition of support through INTEGRITY provides a total development solution for developers of communication and networking applications.

"Motorola delivers intelligence and programmability to the network, and we're proud to offer such a broad portfolio of networking silicon," said David Perkins, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Networking and Computing Systems Group. "Green Hills consistently supports our PowerQUICC and PowerPC processor families, and we applaud their commitment to our new PowerQUICC III architecture. Since last summer, PowerQUICC III customers have been able to develop and run their software on MULTI and its simulator, and we continue to work closely with Green Hills to enable INTEGRITY to play a key role in PowerQUICC III applications."

INTEGRITY is a fast, deterministic, royalty-free RTOS designed for applications that require high performance, high reliability, and a cost-effective business model. Utilizing the hardware memory protection facilities of the PowerQUICC III processor's MMU, INTEGRITY builds a firewall between the kernel and user tasks that prevents errant or malicious code from corrupting user data, the kernel, interprocess communications, device drivers and other user tasks. INTEGRITY also enhances reliability and determinism by running with interrupts continuously enabled and guaranteeing access to the CPU and memory for critical tasks. Other RTOS solutions do not offer this protection or security, leaving systems vulnerable to failure from errant application code, viruses, and hackers.

The MPC8560 is a high-performance communications processor based on the e500 PowerPC ISA Book E core. The MPC8560 features 256 kbytes of L2 cache, a 64-bit, 133-MHz PCI-X controller, 4-channel DMA, a RapidIO port, and dual 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet controllers.

The MPC8560 also features an on-chip non-blocking crossbar switch fabric known as OceaN™ (On-Chip Network). This unique combination of high-performance processing, versatile I/O, and high throughput makes the MPC8560 an ideal solution for a broad range of communications and networking applications.

INTEGRITY is part of a complete solution comprised of Green Hills Software's MULTI® IDE, the first IDE available for the PowerQUICC III family, and the Green Hills Probe™. Together with the Green Hills family of optimizing C/C++/EC++ compilers, the solution automates all aspects of embedded software development, from board bring-up to product deployment to in-field debugging and upgrades.

INTEGRITY is tightly integrated with Green Hills Software's MULTI IDE. MULTI includes a source-level debugger, program builder, run-time error checker, version control, and code/performance optimization wizard. MULTI also features an INTEGRITY simulator (ISIM), which enables programmers to develop and test their code on a PC or workstation without the need for PowerQUICC III hardware; and a real-time EventAnalyzer™, which enables users to view system and user events in a graphical display. INTEGRITY also features field upgrading/debugging and dynamic task downloading - features valuable to communication and networking applications.

MULTI's optimizing C and C++ compilers, which have taken top honors in recent EEMBC Telecom and Dhrystone performance benchmarks, produce fast and compact code for the MPC8540/60's e500 core. The compilers provide a number of key optimizations that take full advantage of the e500 core's advanced instruction set, pipeline, registers, SIMD data types, and SIMD intrinsics.

MULTI for the entire PowerQUICC family, including the MPC8560 and MPC8540, is available now. INTEGRITY for the MPC8540 and MPC8560 will be available in early Q3 as early development boards are available.
