Green Hills Software Introduces Low-Cost, High-Performance USB Hardware Debug Probe

Santa Barbara, CA. September 17, 2002 -- Green Hills Software, Inc. today announced the Slingshot™, a low-cost, high-performance, plug-n-play hardware debug probe for 32-bit and 64-bit embedded systems. The new probe, together with Green Hills Software's MULTI® 2000 source-level debugger and Integrated Development Environment (IDE), greatly simplifies the debugging of sophisticated embedded programs by providing program download and run control without the need for a ROM monitor. Slingshot supports most major embedded CPU architectures, including PowerPC, ARM, XScale and MIPS.

Slingshot gives MULTI users access to, and control over, target processors. Through Slingshot, MULTI users can upload data from the target processor, run, halt, and reset the processor, read/write the processor's registers and memory, single-step through code, and set breakpoints. Slingshot is available for Windows 98/ME/XP/2000, and connects to the host computer via a USB port. The probe connects to the target processor via industry-standard debug ports such as JTAG, EJTAG, COP, and BDM.

Slingshot provides an excellent entry-level complement to Green Hills Software's popular Green Hills Probe™, which addresses high-performance and multi-core applications. Like the Green Hills Probe, Slingshot is equipped with an embedded 32-bit processor that enables it to achieve host/target download speeds of 10-100 Kbyte/sec (500 Kbyte/sec for the Green Hills Probe), up to 2x faster than competitive, comparably priced probes. Tight integration with the MULTI debugger further enhances performance for the two probes by greatly reducing latency for common debug commands.

"Slingshot extends the Green Hills family of hardware debug probes, answering our customers' needs for a low-cost, medium-performance entry point," said John Carbone, vice president of marketing at Green Hills Software. "Like the Green Hills Probe, all of our hardware products are tightly integrated with MULTI, software compatible, and fully supported by Green Hills Software."

Slingshot requires no external power supply and consumes no target power, deriving its power from the host via the USB port. Slingshot can be used with target systems operating at 3.3v, and can be connected/disconnected from the target system while it is running. Diagnostics are included in every segment, all the way down to the JTAG/BDM pin level. Slingshot is packaged in a compact 2.75" x 2.5" x0.75" case, and is provided complete with target and USB cables.
