NEC Electronics and Green Hills Software to Support Designers With Integrated Embedded Solutions

Popular 32-Bit Microcontroller and 64-Bit Microprocessor Products Now Supported by Leading Embedded IDE and Real-Time Operating System

SANTA CLARA and SANTA BARBARA, Calif., June 17, 2002 -- NEC Electronics Inc. and Green Hills Software, Inc. today announced an agreement to integrate NEC's popular V850™ family of embedded 32-bit reduced instruction set computer (RISC) microcontrollers and VR Series™ 64-bit MIPS® microprocessors with Green Hills Software's MULTI® 2000 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and the ThreadX® real-time operating system (RTOS).

Through this agreement, design engineers will now be able to develop automotive, communications, consumer, mobile and industrial applications for NEC's V850 microcontrollers and VR Series processors using one of the industry's leading software development environments. With tight integration between these products, customers will enjoy shortened design cycles and be able to bring embedded designs to market more quickly. The companies also announced that NEC Electronics has joined the Green Hills Software Third-Party Program, ensuring further cooperation between the companies to benefit mutual customers.

"When developing embedded applications, it is important to choose high-performance, power-sensitive components and an efficient software design environment to meet application performance requirements and reduce product design cycles," said Steve Ikei, senior engineering manager for 32-bit microcontroller products, NEC Electronics Inc. "NEC Electronics is committed to working with leading software development tool providers like Green Hills Software to provide our customers with reliable software solutions to bring products based on our V850 microcontrollers and VR Series microprocessors to market as quickly and easily as possible."

Robert Redfield, director of partner programs at Green Hills Software, added, "It is crucial to work closely with a leading semiconductor supplier like NEC Electronics to ensure that our combined solution works out of the box and speeds customer products to market. MULTI and ThreadX continue to be an excellent fit for NEC Electronics' popular microcontrollers and microprocessors. Green Hills is pleased to strengthen its relationship with NEC Electronics and welcomes them as a Third-Party Program Partner."

NEC's V850 Microcontrollers

NEC's V850 family of microcontrollers offers a broad range of products for the industrial, communications, automotive, commercial and consumer market segments. Microcontrollers in the V850 family are available in a variety of memory and peripheral configurations. With their low power consumption, V850 microcontrollers are well-suited for use in 16-bit applications, yet they offer the greater performance and memory advantages of 32-bit products. Additionally, NEC Electronics offers customers a variety of middleware and cost-effective emulator solutions to assist in the development of software applications for V850-based embedded systems. NEC Electronics also licenses the V850 intellectual property (IP) core to customers for implementation in application specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

NEC's VR Series Microprocessors

NEC's VR Series 64-bit MIPS microprocessors provide comprehensive solutions for embedded system designers. Implementing the MIPS 64-bit instruction set architecture, all of the VR Series microprocessors are code-compatible and offer broad scalability. Furthermore, NEC Electronics is committed to providing complete system support for its VR Series microprocessors by offering a wide range of companion chipsets, development platforms and a comprehensive set of development tools.

Green Hills Software's MULTI IDE and the ThreadX RTOS

MULTI 2000 is a complete IDE for embedded applications using C, C++ and Ada 95 languages. MULTI runs on Windows®-, UNIX®- or Linux-based host systems and supports remote debugging to a variety of target environments. MULTI provides a direct graphical interface with all Green Hills Software compilers, and supports multi-language development and debugging. MULTI contains all the tools needed to complete a major programming project, including Project Builder, Source Level Debugger, EventAnalyzer&153;, Performance Profiler, Run-Time Error Checking, Code Coverage Analysis, Graphical Browser, Text Editor and Version Control System.

ThreadX is a highly efficient, royalty-free real-time operating system optimized for NEC's VR Series- and V850-based applications that place a premium on small-size, fast-response time. It is tightly integrated with MULTI and EventAnalyzer which gives the programmer a system-level view of application and RTOS events.
