Green Hills Software Selected by Honeywell as Software Supplier For Next-Generation Air Transport Avionics

SANTA BARBARA, CA—November 17, 2003—  Green Hills Software, Inc., the worldwide market leader in high reliability real-time operating system (RTOS) technology for safe and secure applications, today announced that it has been selected by Honeywell to supply the operating system and development tools for Honeywell's future air transport integrated avionics.

Honeywell will use Green Hills Software's ARINC-653-1 compliant INTEGRITY-178B RTOS to host its next generation of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) technology for air transport aircraft.

"Green Hills Software is pleased that Honeywell has selected our operating system to meet the demanding reliability and security requirements of the aerospace industry," said Dan O'Dowd, president of Green Hills Software. "INTEGRITY-178B uniquely satisfies the need for an operating system that provides robust partitioning, supplies real-time performance, and is backed by the Radio Technical Commission for Avionics' DO-178B Level A life-cycle data, all of which is supported by a reliable commercial RTOS supplier."

"Our air transport customers require robust systems that offer flexible functionality, maintainability and dispatch reliability," said Mel Doss, technical manager, Honeywell Aerospace Electronic Systems. "After evaluating a number of other commercial alternatives, we chose INTEGRITY-178B."

"INTEGRITY's superior reliability, security features and product maturity have made it the RTOS of choice for a growing number of military and commercial aircraft, including the B-52, B-1B, C-17, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F-16, Sikorsky S-92 helicopter, and Airbus A380. Whether applications are developed in Ada, C, C++ or a combination of all three, INTEGRITY-178B provides the most reliable, secure platform for hosting airborne software," said O'Dowd.

More on INTEGRITY-178B

INTEGRITY-178B is targeted for the aerospace and defense industry where today's avionics, vetronics and vehicle management systems must comply with the most demanding requirements for safety and security. It is a robustly partitioned hard real-time operating system that has been designed and developed from the ground up to safeguard applications that operate at the highest levels of safety and security classification, from the most catastrophic safety hazards and malicious security threats prevalent today.

INTEGRITY-178B is the RTOS of choice for safety-critical and mission-critical applications where the overwhelming requirement is on system reliability, data integrity and security as well as fast, predictable response. INTEGRITY-178B provides complete time, space and resource protection between multiple applications operating on the same hardware platform. This partitioning effectively builds a firewall between applications executing in different virtual address spaces and the kernel, preventing errors in one application from corrupting other applications or the kernel. A functioning INTEGRITY-178B partition cannot accidentally or maliciously affect another partition's code, I/O, or data. It's mandatory access control features enable or disable shared I/O and system resources between partitions.

INTEGRITY-178B's partitioning and guaranteed resource availability enables applications operating at different safety levels to run concurrently on the same processor. Its protection and access control mechanisms are always invoked, non-bypassable and evaluatable, thereby enforcing Information Flow, Data Isolation and a Periods Processing Security Policy. Its available ARINC-653-1 APplication/EXecutive (APEX) interface provides a recognized standard interface between the operating system of a computer resource and the application software.

INTEGRITY-178B includes an RTOS simulator (ISIM) that enables programmers to develop and test their code on a PC or workstation without the need for target hardware. INTEGRITY-178B also features a real-time event analyzer (EventAnalyzer) that enables viewing of system and user events in a graphical display.

INTEGRITY-178B is available now with DO-178B Level A certification data, the robust MULTI/AdaMULTI development environment, and Green Hills Software's EEMBC-leading PowerPC compiler family. INTEGRITY also supports MIPS, ARM, XScale and x86/Pentium processors.
