Green Hills Software Brings TimeMachine to Every Developer

Announcing New and Innovative TimeMachine Data Collection Solutions
TimeMachineEmbedded Systems Conference
San Jose, CA—April 4, 2006
—Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and device software optimization (DSO), today unveiled two new technologies that help bring TimeMachine to every device software engineer’s desktop: In-Memory TimeMachine data collection and TraceEdge-PCI data collection. These new collection technologies unlock the benefits of Green Hills Software’s revolutionary TimeMachine tool suite for developers using processors without built-in trace support. TimeMachine enables developers to visualize and replay their software’s execution, allowing bugs and inefficiencies to be easily and quickly eliminated and thereby resulting in higher product reliability and faster time-to-market. These new technologies use a patent-pending mechanism that enables TimeMachine visibility without requiring recompilation of the application.

“TimeMachine from Green Hills Software has been one of the most important recent innovations in device software optimization. These new Green Hills technologies will enable the wide adoption of TimeMachine by embedded systems developers – helping them to bring more reliable electronic products to market faster,” commented Steve Balacco, senior analyst of Venture Development Corporation.

In-Memory TimeMachine Data Collection

With the new In-Memory TimeMachine data collection system, every device software engineer can now leverage the full capabilities of TimeMachine on any platform. In addition, developers can immediately use TimeMachine because it requires no special hardware or modifications to their development platform so that they can begin debugging, optimizing and testing their systems more quickly. Like all TimeMachine data collection technologies, In-Memory TimeMachine data collection does not require recompilation of the application.

TraceEdge-PCI Data Collection

TraceEdge-PCI data collection utilizes a hardware adapter that enables the collection of TimeMachine information using a standard PCI slot available in many embedded designs. The TraceEdge-PCI adapter interfaces with the Green Hills SuperTrace probe which collects the information and forwards it to the developer’s workstation. The Green Hills INTEGRITY RTOS comes bundled with the PCI device drivers required to interface with the adapter.

“Prior to In-Memory TimeMachine data collection and TraceEdge-PCI data collection, users of microprocessors without trace capability could attain TimeMachine visibility by connecting the Green Hills SuperTrace probe to the address pins of the main memory bus (i.e. TraceEdge-BUS data collection). However, such access is not always available and requires hardware modifications or the creation of a custom adapter. With these two new data collection solutions, no custom hardware modifications are required. This truly brings TimeMachine to every developer’s desk. Virtually any computer system can now take advantage of it,” commented David Kleidermacher, vice president of engineering at Green Hills Software.

Availability

In-Memory TimeMachine data collection and TraceEdge-PCI data collection are available now for all PowerPC and MIPS processors. The SuperTrace probe is also available for a wide range of processors with on-chip trace capability including ARM, PowerPC, MIPS, and V850. Support for additional processors is planned.
