Green Hills Software Delivers Secure and Fast Internet Communication On New Breed of Freescale Processors

Provides 450% Higher Performance on Freescale’s PowerQUICC™ and ColdFire® Processors with Hardware Encryption Units

Orlando, FL � June 22, 2005, Freescale Technology Forum—Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in real-time operating systems and device software optimization, today announced the availability of optimized RTOS and networking products for Freescale Semiconductor’s advanced PowerQUICC II and PowerQUICC III communications processors containing PowerPC® cores and ColdFire® embedded processors that feature integrated security engines. The integrated Green Hills Software products will benefit software developers that create broadband access and customer premises equipment, such as SOHO routers, DSLAMs, LAN/WAN switches, residential gateways and cable modems.

Green Hills Software’s INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS), velOSity microkernel and IPSec, SSH and SSL secure networking protocols allow application developers to reap the benefits of using authenticated and reliable TCP/IP messages, without re-writing their applications, while simultaneously gaining more processor horsepower for non-networking application functions. Moreover, INTEGRITY and velOSity are royalty-free, thus removing the customer’s burden of per-unit costs.

Faster and Safer Internet Communication

Embedded applications running on the INTEGRITY RTOS and velOSity microkernel use IPSec, SSH and SSL from Interpeak AB to safely and reliably communicate over TCP/IP. These protocols offer security services such as encryption, authentication, data integrity checking and replay protection:

Authentication – verifies sender’s identity
Encryption – protects proprietary information so that it can only be read by the intended recipient
Data Integrity and Replay Protection – guarantees that the received data was not modified or hijacked in transit
VPN – provides secure communication over virtual private networks

Traditionally, embedded developers had to run these security protocols in software—consuming cycles on the main processor—or communicate with non-integrated hardware encryption units. Now, with IPSec, SSH and SSL running on a hardware security engine, developers are able to achieve higher network throughput while freeing the main processor to power more product features. For example, on the ColdFire MCF5485, network throughput is increased 450%.

Software developers need to make little or no change to existing network calls in their application code to use these hardware-accelerated features, lowering the cost of adding security to an existing application.

Royalty-free Real-Time Operating System

The INTEGRITY RTOS has the unmatched reliability and security credentials that are essential for protecting broadband access and customer premises equipment from bugs, hackers and viruses. The INTEGRITY RTOS is the only commercially available, partitioned operating system that has been used in applications certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the highest level required for flight-critical avionics systems. It has also been designed into systems for the U.S. government that require the highest level of security certification.

The velOSity microkernel is small and fast, for cost-sensitive and resource-constrained applications. Software developed for the velOSity microkernel can be upgraded to the INTEGRITY RTOS with no source code changes.

Availability

Green Hills Software’s INTEGRITY and velOSity solutions for IPSec, SSH and SSL are available now on ColdFire processors with integrated security engines. Support for Freescale’s PowerQUICC II and PowerQUICC III processors with integrated security engines will be available in the third quarter of 2005.
