News & PressGreen Hills Software and Interpeak First to Offer Network-Level Security for New ColdFire ProcessorsvelOSity and INTEGRITY Tap Hardware Encryption for Optimized IPsec Network Security AUSTIN, TX —October 4, 2004 — Green Hills Software, Inc., the market leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS), and technology partner Interpeak AB are first to announce support for Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) for Freescale’s new family of ColdFire MCF548x/7x processors with hardware security engines. Now, MCF548x/7x developers using Green Hills Software’s velOSity microkernel or INTEGRITY RTOS can transparently add Interpeak’s IPsec security to their networked embedded applications that automate factories, control building HVAC systems, link medical instruments and supervise point-of-sale terminals. IPsec provides confidentiality, authentication and data integrity for messages sent over the Internet. IPsec encrypts the data to hide its contents from unauthorized viewing, the sender is authenticated and the received data is checked for correctness. To use IPsec, application developers traditionally had to pay for more processing power and add sophisticated encryption algorithms. However, the Green Hills Software and Interpeak solution eliminates these requirements by taking advantage of the ColdFire hardware security engine controller (SEC) to offload the ColdFire CPU, thus enabling higher network throughput and freeing the main CPU to power more product features. In addition, IPsec for the velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS offers the following benefits:
“Secure Internet connections are becoming increasingly critical in a variety of embedded industrial applications, placing tremendous pressure on our customers to add security to their devices without delay,” noted Bill Krakar, tools program manager for Freescale Semiconductor. “To help our customers with this time pressure and the ever increasing pressure on production costs, we have integrated hardware-accelerated encryption directly into the MCF547x/8x ColdFire processor family, and we are helping to ensure the timely availability of robust software solutions by teaming up with industry leaders such as Green Hills Software and Interpeak.” “Studies indicate that, by 2006, encryption will take up 250 Gbps of bandwidth,” observed Lennart Bång, vice president of engineering at Interpeak AB. “Application developers who take advantage of security-tuned processors and integrated solutions such as this one will be strategically positioned to deliver secure, Internet-connected solutions more cost effectively. The ability to reallocate processor resources previously tied up by processing encryption algorithms is a real bonus for compute-intensive applications.” The ColdFire MCF548x/7x hardware security engine integration includes the MD5 and SHA1 hash algorithms with optional HMAC, the DES, 3DES, AES and RC4 encryption algorithms, and hardware-assisted random number generation. IPsec ESP packets are encrypted or decrypted in a single operation using the "snooping" feature of the security engine. Green Hills Software provides a complete range of Interpeak security protocols, including IPsec and IKE for VPN-type applications as well as SSL and SSH. Using the same encryption algorithms, all security protocols benefit from security engine integration. Availability IPsec integrated with the velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS for MCF547x and MCF548x processors will be available from Green Hills Software in fourth quarter 2004.
