I-Logix and Green Hills Software Team-Up to Provide A Complete Solution for Mission- and Safety-Critical Applications Development

Rhapsody® Visual Application Development Platform Provides Push Button Code Generation Support for INTEGRITY® Real-Time Operating System

May 15, 2002 - LONDON -- I-Logix Inc., the leading provider of enterprise solutions for embedded applications development, today announced the integration of its Rhapsody® application development platform with Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS). The integration of Rhapsody, available with the latest Rhapsody in C++ release, provides a development environment specifically targeted for the INTEGRITY® RTOS. This integrated tool chain provides a complete solution from concept to code, eliminating the effort and resources involved in RTOS-specific software development.

Real-time embedded software developers are now able to generate code that will create INTEGRITY-enabled applications by utilizing an INTEGRITY operating system adapter. The INTEGRITY adapter is an operating system abstraction providing the enabling services of the operating system to the application generated by Rhapsody. This integration is extremely important for developers of mission- and safety-critical applications, as the INTEGRITY RTOS is intended for use in maximum-reliability embedded systems. For the first time, developers no longer need to worry about compromising their applications, as INTEGRITY is focused on their needs. Real-time embedded developers are now free to develop their applications within the Rhapsody visual programming environment using the standard Unified Modeling Language™- (UML™) based notation. This environment provides the ability to analyze, design, document and generate production quality code. This code may then be compiled and built with MULTI®, Green Hills Software's IDE, and then used with INTEGRITY to deliver mission- and safety-critical applications without sacrificing real-time performance, security and protection. Rhapsody supplies the user with both the RTOS adapter as well as the source for the adapter, allowing the user greater options for customization.

"Providing developers of real-time embedded systems with an integrated tool chain, from concept to code, allows the developer to focus their efforts on product functionality. INTEGRITY, in combination with Rhapsody, allows mutual customers to spend more time developing their safety critical application without the worry of RTOS integration," said Neeraj Chandra, senior vice president of Marketing and Corporate Development, I-Logix Inc. "Developers will now be able to design more complex systems in less cycles with greater accuracy, resulting in higher productivity and significant cost savings."

Rhapsody is a visual application development platform designed to meet the challenges of real-time embedded system and software development. It allows real-time embedded system and software engineers to analyze, design, implement, and test UML-based applications graphically. Production-quality code is automatically generated as the design evolves and graphical animation allows design diagrams on the development host to be debugged before testing the software on the target. This capability enables reuse at the design level and compresses the overall development cycle. Rhapsody has an open architecture that enables interfacing to leading requirements traceability, configuration management, and testing tools. A complete list of Rhapsody RTOS adapters may be viewed on the I-Logix web site at www.ilogix.com/products/rhapsody/partners.cfm.

INTEGRITY is a secure, fast, deterministic, real-time operating system optimized for embedded applications that place a premium on reliability, real-time performance and testability. Utilizing a processor's memory management (MMU) facilities, INTEGRITY builds a firewall between the kernel and user tasks that prevents errant or malicious code from corrupting other user tasks or the kernel. INTEGRITY delivers maximum responsiveness and determinism by running with interrupts continuously enabled and guaranteeing access to the CPU and memory for critical tasks.

"Green Hills Software understands that developers of mission- and safety-critical applications, for military, aerospace and medical markets, have a difficult job ensuring that applications meet their stringent demands. By partnering with I-Logix, we are able to ensure that developers can confidently build their applications in Rhapsody and then run them under the INTEGRITY RTOS," said John Carbone, vice president of marketing at Green Hills Software. "The INTEGRITY RTOS, through its object-oriented design, allows verification of security as well as integrity of data, communications, individual components and the system as a whole. Developers are able to focus on product functionality, ensure product accuracy and, as a result, reduce time-to-market."

The addition of the INTEGRITY adapter complements the growing number of adapters currently available with the Rhapsody product. Rhapsody users are able to construct and test their applications prior to final RTOS selection. At any point in the development process, developers can seamlessly integrate their application to a selected RTOS when it becomes available. Rhapsody Developer Edition comes with a wide range of common operating system adapters that are ready for use as shipped. In addition, the source code format distribution allows for customization and optimization. This is an extremely flexible process and environment in which the developer can work with maximum productivity.
