Green Hills Software Delivers Industry’s First Secure Networking Platform

INTEGRITY Separation Kernel Key to Secure Communications

GREEN HILLS TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE
SANTA BARBARA, CA—December 6, 2006
Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in device software optimization (DSO) and real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced the availability of its Platform for Secure Networking. Based on the safety- and security-certified INTEGRITY real-time operating system and its U.S.-developed IPv4/v6 networking stack, the Green Hills Platform for Secure Networking delivers industry advancements in secure communications and access that allow networking equipment developers to completely secure their devices and the information flowing through them.

Security holes in network equipment are a larger threat to system down time than software bugs; therefore, designing security into a network device from the onset will provide total reliability, absolute security and maximum availability. INTEGRITY’s mature separation kernel architecture allows for fault isolation and containment – whether that fault is a bug or an attack – allowing for fast system recovery.

“The U.S. government and industry is experiencing a massive and rapidly evolving shift in the near future – from hundreds of different proprietary or specialized communications formats to IP-based networks,” said Alex Lightman, CEO of Innofone.com. “Whether you call it Net Centric Warfare for the military or Enterprise Centric Operations for commercial purposes, it means an explosion in the number of total nodes – including billions of appliances, sensors and products that will be constantly online, many of them by wireless. Because two-dimensional firewalls were never intended for such 3D networks, it will be essential to employ new generations of hardened security products from a high-end company such as Green Hills to protect these extensive networks against cyber attacks, from both internal and external sources.”

Securing the Networked Device

In the near future, most devices you touch will be networked in some fashion. With the advent of IPv6 and the expansion of available IP addresses, even our automobiles will be talking with each other over a mobile network. The advancement of security and reliability of network communication is a requirement in bringing an acceptable comfort level to our transactions involving critical information. Despite running secure communications protocols, such as IPSec, SSL and SSH, the device is still suspect to attacks and compromises, if these applications themselves are not running in a protected, controlled way.

The INTEGRITY RTOS, with its separation kernel technology, is the foundation of the Platform for Secure Networking and is key to providing the secure execution of applications required on network devices today and in the future. INTEGRITY provides the network equipment developers the ability and freedom to architect their device with absolute security. It supports the requirements and security policies of Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS), which is the architecture for composing secure computing systems from high-assurance components. The key concepts of MILS include: protected execution of applications, system services and hardware control/access, brick wall partitioning, guaranteed resource allocation, information flow control between partitions, stack and application isolation, and containment of errors and attacks.

U.S. sourcing and the use of products that are free of foreign influence is a current requirement for numerous devices in the intelligence and military community (e.g., Type-1 NSA-approved crypto devices). This requirement is growing rapidly as the military moves into the network-centric warfare era. U.S. sourced solutions bring a necessary level of trust to devices that secure the nation’s military and critical infrastructure from both internal and external attacks.

“Whether you are at home, work or play you are relying on a diverse range of networked technology for your day-to-day interactions on your computer or mobile device, ranging from a simple email to securing a purchase via your credit card,” commented Dan O’Dowd, founder and chief executive officer of Green Hills Software. “The Green Hills Platform for Secure Networking, with its unique ability to enforce data isolation, control information flow, and protect confidentiality of critical information is the ideal platform for network equipment providers to secure their devices.”
