Green Hills Software, Inc. Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Grows From Optimizing Compilers to Advanced Technology RTOS and Total Embedded Development Solutions

San Francisco, CA. ESC West, Booth #1014. March 13, 2002 -- Green Hills Software today announced its 20th anniversary as a leading embedded development software company. Founded in 1982, Green Hills has grown to become today's technology leader for real-time operating systems and software development tools, supporting embedded developers in major companies world-wide.

Green Hills Software is the first company to reach the 20-year milestone in the real-time embedded software business. "Technology that's a step ahead, excellent customer service and a focus on profitability have played a major role in our success," said CEO and founder Dan O'Dowd. "We're proud of how our success has contributed to the success of our customers and we're pleased to know we've helped their businesses."

Green Hills Software quickly made a name for itself in the early 80's by being the first to apply mainframe compiler technology to microprocessors. Soon, Green Hills became renowned for its high performance optimizing compilers, which produced the fastest, most efficient code for 32-bit embedded microprocessors.

Building on its compiler success, Green Hills became the first company to offer a truly embedded bundled tool set with the introduction of the MULTI® IDE (Integrated Development Environment) in the early 90's. "MULTI was wildly successful the second it became available," said David Chandler, vice president of sales at Green Hills Software and a 10-year employee of the company. "Key companies like AT&T, Ford and Boeing started the ball rolling and it has been non-stop ever since. MULTI's debugger, builder, profiler, and other tools set the standard for IDEs in the embedded industry."

In 1998, Green Hills once again made history, when it introduced INTEGRITY®, the company's first real-time operating system (RTOS) and the only royalty-free RTOS to offer a memory-protected architecture which provides unique protection from system failure due to latent application bugs, hacker infiltration, or virus attack. "Before INTEGRITY, companies like Lucent, Goodrich and Lockheed-Martin were forced to build operating systems internally," commented O'Dowd. "There simply was no commercial product available to meet their security needs…until we launched INTEGRITY."

Craig Franklin, Green Hills Software's vice president of advanced products and with the company 15 years says, "The future is like a crooked road. Time and time again, I've seen our competitors miss a turn as the marketplace moved from CISC to RISC to SIMD or DSP, from simple standalone tools to full, integrated development environments, or from tiny kernels to fully secure, certified, industrial-strength real time operating systems. Green Hills is strong because we listen to what customers want now, yet we're always planning for what they'll need five years from now."

Today, Green Hills Software's products are utilized in every industry using embedded computers including aerospace, telecomm, medical, automotive, military, and consumer products. Green Hills Software's customer roster includes most Fortune 100 and many emerging technology companies.

In addition to Green Hills Software's two decades of product and technology leadership, the company has stunned analysts with its incredible financial performance. "We've had a perfect record of revenue growth and profitability since the beginning," said Bob Hull, Green Hills Software's CFO. "You won't find any other embedded software company that can say that. What's more, we've grown our core business with consistently positive cash-flow without reliance on VC investment, and without acquisition of other companies to boost our numbers."

The future for Green Hills looks even more promising with a treasure chest full of new developments for this year and far beyond. "We are very excited about the next 20 years - and the 20 years after that," said O'Dowd. "Our customers have made us what we are today and we're looking forward to providing them with countless more decades of innovative, step-ahead products and services."
