Green Hills Software Announces In-Memory TimeMachine for Freescale PowerQUICC™ Processors

Enables Communications Device Developers to Fix Bugs Faster, Optimize With Ease, and Test with Confidence

FREESCALE TECHNOLOGY FORUM, ORLANDO, FL
July 26, 2006
—Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in device software optimization (DSO) and real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced that its award-winning TimeMachine tool suite is now available for all Freescale’s PowerQUICC™ I, II, and III family processors built on Power Architecture™ technology. Green Hills’ innovative In-Memory TimeMachine technology provides system visibility with a software-only solution for processors that do not offer trace port functionality. Developers can debug backwards and forwards in time to find the most elusive bugs and use TimeMachine analysis tools to quickly pinpoint performance bottlenecks and evaluate execution flow. The result is faster time-to-market with a more reliable and better performing product.

“TimeMachine represents the state-of-the-art in debugging and system analysis technology. In fact, in a few years, developers will no longer use ‘debuggers’,” commented David Kleidermacher, CTO of Green Hills Software. “Rather, developers will demand a TimeMachine tool that enables them to debug their applications not only as they run forward, but also backwards in time, reliving how a system ran in the past to make it trivial to find even the most ridiculously hard bugs.”

“The Green Hills TimeMachine suite is an innovative technology in the area of software development tools,” said Lynelle McKay, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Digital Systems Division. “We are pleased that Green Hills has focused this innovation on Freescale processors, enabling developers of communications devices to create more reliable, better performing products while bringing them to market faster than previously possible.”

Many developers agree that they spend most of their time debugging during the development of a communications system. Irreproducible glitches, such as dropping of packets or connections after days of successful operation, kill software development schedules and delay products. Furthermore, many communications devices live and die by the rate of data throughput, the rate of route updates, or other metrics; optimization time is often more than 10% of the entire development budget. TimeMachine can reduce and sometimes totally eliminate these activities from the schedule.
