Green Hills Software Announces Support for Multicore Microprocessor from Freescale

Availability of Leading DSO Solution for the Dual-Core MPC8641D Processor

Santa Barbara, CA—March 21, 2006
Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and device software optimization (DSO), today announced the availability of its entire DSO product line for the latest Freescale platform SoC, the dual-core MPC8641D processor based on PowerPC® cores. The Green Hills DSO offering includes the INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS) running on both cores, PowerPC compilers, TimeMachine debugger, MULTI integrated development environment (IDE), Green Hills probe, and SuperTrace probe. While each product is a leader in its space, together they form an optimized and highly integrated DSO solution that enables MPC8641D system developers to create the highest performing and most reliable products in the least amount of time and at the lowest cost for solutions in the networking, medical, avionics, defense and industrial control markets.

“The combination of Green Hills Software’s tools and operating systems and Freescale’s MPC8641D processor provides a compelling software and hardware solution across a wide variety of applications and industries,” said Toby Foster, dual-core system architect for Freescale’s Digital Systems Division. “The MPC8641D delivers breakthrough performance, connectivity and integration. Its multicore design greatly benefits from advanced software tools and RTOS from Green Hills, which help our customers tap into this powerful dual-core platform."

Advanced Software Solution for Multicore Designs

While providing scalability and performance advantages over single-core systems, the MPC8641D dual-core processor requires a powerful set of system software and tools that enable developers to efficiently develop and integrate applications spanning both cores. Green Hills Software’s MULTI IDE and probe devices enable developers to simultaneously debug both cores, providing the required visibility and control. In addition, the proven multi-core capabilities of the INTEGRITY RTOS enable applications developers to seamlessly distribute workload across both cores. INTEGRITY represents the most advanced RTOS technology on the market today, achieving unprecedented levels of reliability, availability, and serviceability for applications in telecommunications, aviation, defense, networking, automotive, consumer, medical, and other industries.

TimeMachine

Complex multicore device software optimization requires much more than just a good debugger. The MULTI TimeMachine suite offers a wide variety of analysis tools that enable embedded software developers to find and fix bugs faster, optimize with ease, and test with confidence. TimeMachine provides unprecedented visibility into the complex interactions in software that can result in bugs, performance problems, and testing nightmares. Execution of the PowerPC cores is recorded using Green Hills Software’s patent-pending TraceEdge instrumentation technology.

PowerPC Compilers

For more than a decade, Green Hills Software’s compilers have been recognized for their highest performance and smallest size for generated PowerPC code. Freescale has chosen the Green Hills compilers to publish certified processor performance scores for a variety of PowerPC processors, including the e600 core that powers the MPC8641D, on the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC) suite. In addition, the Green Hills Software compiler has built the Linux® kernel for the PowerPC, generating 25% smaller code than the bundled GCC compiler. Smaller footprint and faster code translate directly into lower production cost and higher performance embedded products.

About The MPC8641D Dual-Core Processor

This MPC8641D integrates two e600 PowerPC cores, two memory controllers, Ethernet controllers, a Serial RapidIO™ fabric interface, a PCI Express™ I/O interface, and a high-performance MPX bus. The result is an SoC with tremendous performance and capability.
