Freescale Chooses Green Hills Software’s Development Tools for New Automotive Microcontrollers

Industry Leaders Already Developing Software for Safety, Gateway and Instrument Cluster Controllers

SANTA BARBARA, CA—May 5, 2009 — Green Hills Software, Inc., the world leader in certified safe and secure real-time operating systems (RTOS) and device software optimization (DSO), today announced the successful launch of optimized software products that support automotive microcontrollers (MCUs) jointly developed with Freescale Semiconductor based on the Power Architecture® technology.

Leading automotive carmakers and tier 1 suppliers in North America and Europe now use Green Hills Software's MULTI® integrated development environment (IDE), optimizing C/C++ compilers and high-speed hardware probes to reduce their cost and time-to-market while creating small-footprint, high-performance production and high-quality software for airbags, gateways, brakes, low-end engines and entry-level instrument clusters.

Leading Customers Choose Green Hills Software
TRW Automotive, a global leader in automotive safety, produces advanced active systems in braking, steering, suspension and sophisticated occupant safety systems, including airbags, seat belts and steering wheels. Jim Pawloski, global chief engineer at TRW states, "We carefully benchmarked and evaluated different processor and software tools configurations for our next-generation airbag crash sensor ECU. We selected the Freescale - Green Hills solution, because they clearly provided us superior performance at a competitive cost."

Freescale Chooses Green Hills Software
Carmakers and their tier 1 suppliers throughout the world have sold millions of automobiles and trucks with embedded controllers running software built with Green Hills Software's tools, because they help satisfy stringent software quality, performance, and cost-efficiency requirements.

"Green Hills delivers exceptional code efficiency with its Power Architecture compilers and toolchain - a key ingredient for the success of our MPC56xx Power Architecture microcontroller families," said Ray Cornyn, director of automotive microcontrollers at Freescale Semiconductor. "We are pleased that mutual customers are seeing outstanding performance and minimal footprint from the combination of the Green Hills software and our MPC56xx MCUs."

Freescale chose Green Hills Software as a key software launch partner for the MPC560x and MPC563x MCU families. The MULTI IDE and high-speed Nexus hardware probes for the jointly developed automotive 32-bit MCUs includes several automotive-tuned technologies and services, including:

  • Optimizing C/C++ Compilers—With over 15 years of compiler and linker technology advances, Green Hills Software compilers produce the smallest and fastest code for Power Architecture technology according to benchmarks certified by the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC). In fact, manufacturers of Power Architecture processors have chosen Green Hills Software's compilers four times more often than all other competing compilers combined when certifying their highest performance benchmark results through EEMBC.
For the jointly developed MCUs, Green Hills used its advanced technologies to develop specific optimizations, including CodeFactor link time optimization, pipeline scheduling and automatic SDA (small data area) optimizations.
  • Production Quality Code—The MULTI IDE’s MISRA C Checker enables software teams to check and enforce good coding practices against the MISRA C (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association) standard at compile and run-time. In addition, the DoubleCheck™ integrated source code analysis tool deeply inspects code in a unique "single-pass, whole program" approach.
  • High Speed Nexus Probes—Hardware debug devices connect MULTI to the Nexus port and provide fast run control, reliable debugging, trace gathering, flash programming and system visibility.
  • Frozen Branch Support—For over 26 years, Green Hills has offered custom "high-touch" technical support to select automotive customers such as Ford and Toyota. Frozen Branch Support enables customers to maintain a private and unique branch of a release of the Green Hills products for 10 years or more.

About Green Hills Software
