Green Hills Software Announces µ-velOSity™ for NEC Electronics V850 32-bit Microcontrollers

Ultra-small, Ultra-fast, Royalty-free Microkernel
Ideal Fit for High-Volume, Performance-Critical, Power-Sensitive Applications

SANTA BARBARA , CA —July 23, 2007—Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in device software optimization (DSO) and real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced that its µ-velOSity RTOS is now available for the NEC Electronics V850 family of embedded microcontrollers. With a ROM footprint as small as 2K bytes, RAM footprint as small as 1K bytes, and service call times as low as 30 cycles, µ-velOSity is ideal for the cost-sensitive, high-performance applications for which V850 is intended.

Easy to Use
µ-velOSity is extremely easy to use. With complete kernel source code and MULTI’s kernel-aware debugging and project-creation wizard, V850 device software is easy to develop, analyze, debug, test, and optimize for any aspect of the system.

Fast Execution
µ-velOSity provides extremely fast operating system services and real-time, deterministic execution. Context switching, service calls, and interrupt handling for V850 are finely tuned for maximum throughput and minimum latency, even under heavy loads – making it ideal for devices with demanding performance requirements.

Small Footprint
µ-velOSity’s industry-leading small footprint makes it ideal for embedded systems that have the tightest memory constraints. µ-velOSity is delivered as a library and is automatically configured by the Green Hills tool chain to include only those services that are actually used by the applications, delivering the smallest, most efficient footprint possible.

Simple Business Models
µ-velOSity does not have a per-unit royalty charge, avoiding the headache of royalty reporting and making it ideal for high-volume, cost-sensitive V850-based embedded products. Green Hills Software’s attractive licensing model enables µ-velOSity to be included in a value-added solution for end product developers at a fraction of the cost of other offerings.

“The V850 cores present an ideal architecture for the Green Hills Software µ-velOSity real-time operating system which specializes in top performance, ease-of-use, and small memory and power footprint,” commented David Kleidermacher, chief technology officer of Green Hills Software. “On top of all of this, Green Hills offers royalty-free, simple business models which are critical to those employing V850 in high-volume electronic products.”

About the V850
NEC Electronics' V850 microcontrollers incorporate a 32-bit RISC core based on Harvard architecture. Hence, the core hardware can be simplified and the core size minimized. As a result, V850 family microcontrollers provide maximum performance at the lowest cost. The V850 families’ cost-efficiency and reliability lend its use to a variety of applications, including automotive body electronics, motor control, and metering. The V850 family of microcontrollers has a wide variety of instantiations, providing a flexible choice of memory sizes and on-chip peripherals, including CAN, DMA, timers, and I2C.

Availability
µ-velOSity for V850 microcontrollers is available today.
