GateD Family of Multicast Routing Protocols
DVMRP, MSDP, PIM-DM, PIM-SM, PIM-SSM
|
The GateD® family of Multicast routing protocols consists of: DVMRP Module (Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol),
MSDP Module (Multicast Source Discovery Protocol), PIM-DM (Protocol Independent Multicast - Dense Mode), PIM-SM
Module (Protocol Independent Multicast - Sparse Mode), and PIM-SSM Module (Protocol Independent Multicast - Source Specific Multicast). Taken together, the modules represent the state of the art in multicast routing for all applications. |

Product Overview |
Green Hills Software multicast routing protocol comes with all of the basic functionality necessary for multicast routing. The primary items included with each multicast routing protocol are the MBR, MRT, IGMP (for use with IPv4), and MLD
(for use with IPv6).
The MBR (Multicast Border Router) functionality is used to give ownership of different interfaces to different multicast
routing protocols. This is necessary so that more than one protocol can be run on the box at the same time.
The MRT (Multicast Routing Table) maintains the state associated with sources and groups, which is subsequently fed
to the forwarding engine.
IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) is a basic building block for multicast routing that allows hosts to report their group memberships to IPv4 routers.
Similarly, MLD (Multicast Listener Discovery) allows hosts to report their group memberships to IPv6 routers. In addition to these major features, Green Hills GateD supports a number of minor features such as static joins, which allow the user to defi ne a persistent group membership.
Used as the foundation for the MBone, DVMRP is the multicast equivalent of RIP, and Green Hills implements the latest
version – version 3. Designed in the early days of multicast research, DVMRP is largely considered a legacy protocol
today and is quickly being replaced by PIM. As with most protocols, Green Hills is very active in the development
of the multicast standards. Green Hills GateD PIM-DM module supports PIM-DM version 2.
The PIM-SM module supports PIM-SM version 2. The IPv4 PIM-SSM module utilizes IGMPv3 to support source-specific
multicast. Likewise, the IPv6 PIM-SSM module utilizes MLDv2 to support source-specific multicast.
The last of the five protocols, MSDP, is the inter-domain protocol for operation between PIM domains. When deployed
in conjunction with PIM-DM, PIM-SM, or PIM-SSM, MSDP completes the picture, letting sources and groups discover
each other across administrative boundaries.
As with all Green Hills routing products, the multicast family of protocols strikes the perfect balance between richness of features and the safety of deployed code that is working in the Internet today. The original GateD multicast routing protocols have been shipping since 1997. And like the unicast routing protocols, the multicast protocols are fully tested for conformance and interoperability. |
