Santa Barbara, CA. September 28, 1999--Green Hills Software, Inc. today announced the results of a new study by Miller Freeman's Electronics Market Forecasters (EMF) Group, in which Green Hills Software is reported to be the number one supplier worldwide of compilers-debuggers for embedded applications. The newly released EMF report, "Software Development Tools and Realtime Operating Systems For Embedded Systems Design," tracks worldwide shipments of embedded operating systems, development tools in 1998, with total market forecasts and analysis through 2003.

According to data contained in the EMF report, Green Hills Software's 1998 Compiler-Debugger shipments topped those of all other suppliers of embedded compilers and debuggers. Dr. Jerry Krasner, author of the EMF report, comments: "Although Green Hills is a leading IDE vendor, if their compiler-debugger shipments were separately tabulated, Green Hills would be the market leader of that segment."

EMF Chart In the worldwide market for Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), Green Hills Software's MULTI(r) IDE finished in a "virtual tie" for first place, along with Wind River Systems' Tornado(r), and Integrated Systems, Inc's pRISM+(r).

Dr. Krasner continues, "In completing this report, we found Green Hills Software to be a dominant player in the development tools arena, in spite of recent mergers and acquisitions in the industry. Green Hills keeps chalking up top numbers as evidence of their overall appeal among embedded developers."

"This EMF report confirms our position as the leading supplier of development tools for embedded applications," said John Carbone, Green Hills Software's vice president of marketing. "As a tools company, Green Hills Software stands alone atop the industry." Adds Carbone, "The report also provides a good insight into developer preferences and development trends through a strong collection and analysis of user survey results. This helps us to understand what users consider most important, and what their long-term plans call for."

According to the Report, the 1998 worldwide market for embedded software development tools and RTOSes totaled $705 million. An additional $104 million in related services brought the total worldwide market for merchant vendors to $809 million.

The Report also includes the results of a user survey of Embedded Systems Programming subscribers. Data describing what hardware and software systems and development tools these developers currently use and plan to use, and what they are looking for from vendors who supply their tools. These results are presented in over 120 separate tables, with the exact question to which the responses pertain listed with the data.
