Embedded Systems Conference Spring. March 31, 1998 -- Green Hills Software, Inc., today announced the integration of its MULTI embedded software development environment with Express Logic's ThreadX Real-Time Operating System. The new ThreadX-aware version of MULTI comes with an enhanced graphical user interface that provides unique views into the ThreadX objects that are not available with other development environments.

"ThreadX is an efficient high-performance real-time kernel designed for embedded applications," said John Carbone, vice president of marketing for Green Hills. "Offered royalty-free along with our MULTI Integrated Development Environment, this combined solution provides an excellent off-the-shelf target environment for high-volume embedded applications."

Green Hills has integrated ThreadX support directly into MULTI, enabling it to provide comprehensive task- and kernel-aware debugging. The new ThreadX-aware MULTI can display multiple tasks ("threads") graphically, including the thread roster, system objects, stack usage, semaphore usage and status, and a variety of other thread-specific and system-specific information. This capability enables embedded developers to identify thread-specific bugs by setting either system or thread-specific breakpoints.

The MULTI GUI provides ten new ThreadX-specific windows not available with other development environments that greatly simplify the analysis and debugging of sophisticated programs. Kernel objects, for example, can be displayed easily with a simple double-click of the mouse.

View windows, similarly can be stacked for simultaneous display of multiple objects and variables. Host/target connectivity options include JTAG OCD (On-Chip Debugging), EST visionICE, Orion ADViCE, HP Processor Probe, and ROM Monitors.

"Green Hills' MULTI, together with the new features added to support ThreadX debugging, provide outstanding values for programmers, says Bill Lamie, president of Express Logic. "This integration is by far the most comprehensive and powerful available today for ThreadX development."

The MULTI/ThreadX tandem will initially be available for the PowerPC ARM/Thumb, Strong/ARM, i960, and 68K processor families. The two companies also plan to support a variety of other 32-bit and 64-bit processors in the near future, including the SH, MIPS, NEC, and TriCore families.

The Green Hills MULTI Development Environment

The Green Hills MULTI Development Environment provides a framework of integrated development tools that supports both small and large workgroups. MULTI includes all the tools needed to support a major programming effort. These tools include a source level debugger, program builder, configuration manager, version control and program editor. With this tool set, a programming team can perform run time error checking and do execution profiling. These components communicate with each other for enhanced functionality and support both native and embedded development.
