Chicago, IL. Embedded Systems Spring. March 31, 1998 -- Green Hills Software announces that Lexmark International, Inc. has selected Green Hills MULTI software development environment and optimizing C compiler to develop the embedded software for its MarkNet Pro external print servers and MarkNet S internal print servers. The software runs on Hitachi's SH2 RISC processor under Lexmark's proprietary real-time operating system.

The MarkNet Pro is a family of stackable external print servers supporting all major network printing environments. Available with 10/100-Mbps Ethernet and 4/16-Mbps token ring network interfaces, the servers support simultaneous multi-protocol, multi-operating system printing. Lexmark's premiere MarkVision software and a Java applet are used to provide SNMP printer management and status monitoring.

The MarkNet S print servers plug into the Optra S family of PostScript Level 2 and PCL 6 compatible network business printers, which offer print resolutions of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi and print speeds of up to 25 ppm. Through the MarkNet S internal print servers, the Optra S printers gain the same network connectivity as is provided with the MarkNet Pro external print servers.

Lexmark used Green Hills' MULTI Environment to develop the embedded software for both the MarkNet Pro print servers and the MarkNet S internal print servers. This included development and implementation of the real-time operating system, the individual protocol stacks, the front-end software interface, the back end software interface, and a wide variety of support routines.

Lexmark evaluated a variety of development tools for the Hitachi processor, but opted for the Green Hills MULTI environment and optimizing C compiler.

"MULTI's profiling tools," noted Vic Mollett, advisory programmer at Lexmark, "were especially helpful in enabling us to be more effective with our testing methodologies. In particular, we were able to significantly increase our code coverage, which bears directly on printer reliability."

Green Hills' MULTI Development Environment automates every aspect of software development for Hitachi's SH2 processor. Featuring a window-oriented editor and a source-level debugger with support for process-and system-level debug, MULTI also includes a run-time error checker, application profiler, and both project and version control.

MULTI is tightly integrated with Green Hills' optimizing C compiler, which incorporates a host of innovative local and global optimizations.

"These optimizations," remarked Green Hills President Dan O'Dowd, "are essential for developing the fast, compact code required for embedded communications applications like network printing."

Founded in 1982, Green Hills Software, Inc., is a leading supplier of software development tools for 32- and 64-bit embedded systems. Green Hills offers a family of optimizing Ada95, C, C++, and FORTRAN compilers. The company also offers a software development environment (MULTI and AdaMULTI) that automates the compile-edit-build-debug cycle by integrating advanced facilities such as an RTOS-aware source-level debugger, profiler, program builder and source code control system.

Green Hills' tools support all major advanced microprocessor families and target environments, including instruction set simulators, ROM Monitors, commercial and home-grown real-time operating systems (RTOS) and in-circuit emulators (ICE).
