SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Dec. 23, 1997 - Green Hills Software, Inc., today announced the availability of a free demonstration/evaluation CD-ROM containing its popular C and C++ Optimizing Compilers and MULTI® Integrated Development Environment for PowerPC targeted development. The CD contains an interactive demonstration of Green Hills products, actual evaluation software copies of the PowerPC compilers and MULTI, a Quick-Start Tutorial to help first-time users get up and running, full Product Documentation, and introductory information on Green Hills Software and its customers.

Product Demonstration

The Product Demonstration contained on the CD provides a multimedia, interactive, user-paced demonstration of Green Hills Optimizing Compilers and MULTI. The demo includes the construction and debugging of a sample application program containing C, C++, and Fortran modules. The program is compiled on the Host PC under Windows 95, for execution on an embedded PowerPC ADS860 board from Motorola, using the Hewlett Packard Processor Probe as the Host-Target connection. The demonstration covers all aspects of embedded program development, including writing/editing the source code, compiling, downloading, debugging, and version control. MULTI's powerful capabilities in all of these areas are highlighted. The user can control the sequence of topics, pause/single-step the demo, fast-forward to a particular section, select narrative sound or mute, and stop at any time. This flexibility is extremely valuable in helping the viewer to spend as much time in a given section as he or she would like.

MULTI Quick-Start Tutorial

In addition to the evaluation software and demonstration, a Quick-Start Tutorial is included that walks the user through the actual step-by-step process of writing a program, compiling it, downloading it to a target, and debugging it remotely from the Host. As opposed to the demonstration, which is intended to show many of MULTI's varied capabilities, the tutorial is limited in scope to provide an example of the minimal steps needed to get up and running.

Evaluation Software

The CD contains a full complement of evaluation software for use with the user's application software or benchmarks. The software consists of C and C++ Optimizing Compilers for the PowerPC, including the industry's first support for Embedded C++ ("EC++"). All popular versions of the PowerPC are supported, including 4xx, 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, and 8xx models from Motorola and IBM. Also included is the MULTI Integrated Development Environment containing source-level debugger, remote target connection server, text editor, graphical program builder, C++/EC++ class browser, execution profiler, run-time error checking, and version control. MULTI includes everything needed for embedded application development. Activation of the evaluation software is by license key, issued upon e-mail or written request to Green Hills.

Product Documentation

A complete set of user documentation is provided on the CD, including:

  • Evaluation Software Installation Guide
  • Green Hills C User's Guide
  • Green Hills C++ User's Guide
  • MULTI Software Development Environment Reference Manual
  • Embedded PowerPC Development Guide
