SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 20, 1994 --- Digital Equipment
today announced that it has entered into a development agreement with
Green Hills Software, Inc. (Santa Barbara, Calif.), to supply compilers
and a cross development environment to support the development of
realtime and embedded applications based on the Alpha AXP microprocessor
family. The announcement was made at the Air Traffic Controllers
Conference, which opened here today at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City
Convention Center.
Through this development agreement, Green Hills, the industry's
leading provider of cross-compiler development tools, will provide a
fully integrated development environment which will allow Digital's line
of Alpha AXPvme line of PCI-based VME single board computers to be used
in embedded applications.
"Within two years, we expect that most of our realtime and embedded
OEMs will be developing embedded applications on Alpha AXP host
systems," said Steve Hargrave, of Digital's Embedded and Realtime
Products Group. "The availability of Green Hills' solutions will allow
these OEMs to develop higher performance, 64-bit RISC applications for
Alpha AXP targets using thier existing development environments. This
is an important step in realizing our long-term objective for Alpha in
the embedded sector."
Hargrave stated that the Green Hills solution was the natural choice
for Digital for two primary reasons: 1) Green Hills' outstanding name
recognition and market share in the high-performance embedded systems
market, and 2) the capabilities of Green Hills' MULTI Development
Environment provided superior cross-integration in a mixed platform
environment. "With the MULTI Development Environment, our Alpha AXP
OEMs can also develop applications for Motorola 68000 targets or use
their legacy Sun or Hewlett Packard workstations," said Hargrave. "As
embedded OEMs juggle old and next generation systems within a complex
development environment, they must download applications to a variety of
target systems as well as handle debugging in a mixed computing
environment.
Through the development agreement with Digital, Green Hills will
have accesses to Digital's worldwide OEM customers, including Raytheon,
Baily and Phillips.
"Our development agreement with Digital will showcase the
capabilities of our tools in a whole new performance realm afforded by
the 64-bit RISC Alpha AXP architecture," said David Chandler, vice
president for end user sales at Green Hills. "We are very proud to
offer tools for the fastest chip in the world."
