Green Hills Dismisses Wind River Lawsuit as Scare Tactic

Santa Barbara, CA, October 8, 2001 -- Green Hills Software, Inc., today announced a complete denial of Wind River Systems' (NASDAQ:WIND) allegations that Green Hills Software's EventAnalyzer™ and MULTI® Integrated Development Environment infringe a Wind River patent.

Green Hills Software's EventAnalyzer™ is a powerful graphical embedded development tool used to capture and display an event timeline that enables developers to study system events such as context switches and semaphores, and user-defined application events as well. The EventAnalyzer can be used with Green Hills Software's royalty-free, secure INTEGRITY® RTOS, the small-footprint, royalty-free ThreadX® RTOS, or a user's proprietary RTOS.

"We developed our EventAnalyzer product entirely ourselves, without reliance on any technology patented by Wind River Systems or anyone else," stated Dan O'Dowd, President and CEO of Green Hills Software. "We were well aware of Wind River's patent (i.e.: the Wilner '909 patent) when we developed our EventAnalyzer product, and we used an entirely different approach."

The Wind River lawsuit also alleges that Green Hills Software's popular MULTI Integrated Development Environment infringes their patent. O'Dowd commented, "MULTI is a completely separate product from the EventAnalyzer. MULTI couldn't possibly infringe this patent because MULTI was developed, announced, and delivered to customers years before this patent was filed. A lawsuit that only alleged patent infringement by the EventAnalyzer, a product that produces relatively little revenue, would not have been newsworthy. Wind River's absurd claim that MULTI infringes their patent indicates that this lawsuit is just a scare tactic."

"Customers recognize that our INTEGRITY real-time operating system is technically superior to any of Wind River's operating systems. This is the biggest reason that Green Hills Software's sales have been increasing as Wind River's sales have plummeted (http://www.ghs.com/corporate/financial_ announcements.html)," said David Chandler, vice president of sales for Green Hills Software. Chandler continued, "I believe this lawsuit is a transparent attempt to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt in order to stop customers from choosing the best technical solution."

O'Dowd concludes: "We will vigorously defend our technology, and we want to assure our customers and partners that this frivolous lawsuit by Wind River will have no impact whatsoever on our product availability, support and ongoing development."
