Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY® RTOS Selected by NASA For Use in First-of-its-Kind Spacecraft Navigation Instrument

Reliability Cited in Selection of INTEGRITY Over VxWorks

Boston, MA. Embedded Systems Conference, September 6, 2001 -- Green Hills Software, Inc., a leading supplier of real-time operating systems and embedded development tools, today announced that its INTEGRITY® real-time operating system (RTOS) and MULTI® 2000 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) have been selected by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to develop signal processing software for its Constellation Communication Navigation Transceiver (CCNT) instrument. CCNT, a first-of-its kind instrument, will be used in NASA's trailblazing ST5 mission to test new technologies in space.

The ST5 mission was created to evaluate methods of operating several spacecraft as a system, and to test new technologies in the harsh space environment near the boundary of the Earth's protective magnetic field. Results from the ST5 mission will be used to design future missions using constellations of lightweight, highly miniaturized autonomous spacecraft.

The CCNT instrument will perform autonomous radiometric tracking, global position (GPS) tracking, and navigation for large constellations of spacecraft on and around Earth and Mars. It will allow spacecraft to transfer data among themselves and to process this data in space, rather than transferring it to Earth for processing. A PowerPC processor running the INTEGRITY RTOS provides the backbone for CCNT's tracking and navigation system. MULTI was used to develop the signal processing software required for the tracking, navigation, and signal processing functions.

"INTEGRITY's memory-protected architecture provides the underpinning for its superior reliability, safety, and availability," added John Carbone, vice president of marketing for Green Hills Software. "JPL's engineers can rest easy knowing that INTEGRITY is hosting CCNT's mission critical tracking and navigation functions."

INTEGRITY is a scalable, memory-protected, royalty-free RTOS. Leveraging the hardware memory protection facilities of the PowerPC's Memory Management Unit (MMU), INTEGRITY maximizes security and reliability by building a "firewall" between the kernel and user tasks. INTEGRITY also guarantees the availability of system resources like the CPU and memory, making it far more responsive and predictable than conventional embedded operating systems.

The MULTI 2000 IDE, together with Green Hills' family of optimizing C, C++, EC++ and Ada95 compilers, automates all aspects of software development for the PowerPC processor. Available for Windows and Unix host platforms, the MULTI IDE features a window-oriented editor, source-level debugger, graphical program builder, run-time error checker, version control system, performance profiler, and real-time EventAnalyzer™. MULTI also features an instruction set simulator that allows programmers to develop and test their PowerPC code on a PC or workstation without the need for the target hardware.
