SANTA BARBARA, CA—September 28, 2005—Green Hills Software, Inc., the leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), announced today that its MULTI development environment now supports Wind River Systems’ VxWorks RTOS version 6. As a result, MULTI is the first development environment to support both VxWorks versions 5 and 6. In contrast, Wind River Systems supplies different development environments for each VxWorks version: Tornado for VxWorks 5 and Workbench for VxWorks 6.
“Green Hills Software is the first and only vendor to fulfill the DSO promise of a single, enterprise-wide development solution for organizations using VxWorks,” commented Dan O’Dowd, founder and chief executive officer of Green Hills Software. “Implementing the best DSO strategy requires standardizing on one development environment across all projects. With MULTI, we provide the only solution that supports Wind River’s legacy VxWorks 5, the most widely used RTOS, in addition to Wind River’s new RTOS, VxWorks 6. We also support all other popular embedded operating systems, such as our own INTEGRITY and velOSity, Linux and others.”
Premier Tools for VxWorks
In addition to providing a single development environment that supports both VxWorks versions 5 and 6, MULTI provides many significant DSO advantages to organizations using VxWorks over the tools supplied by Wind River. These include:
- Superior Eclipse integration. Green Hills Software’s tools can be plugged into customers’ existing Eclipse environment, whereas Wind River Workbench for VxWorks 6 includes a proprietary, customized version of Eclipse that customers must use in addition to their own. Wind River’s Tornado development environment for VxWorks 5 does not support Eclipse.
- Faster code. In order to achieve the highest possible performance on benchmarks that were certified and
published by the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC), microprocessor vendors—including Analog Devices, Freescale, IBM and NEC—have selected Green Hills compilers twice as often as the two compilers supported by Wind River combined, Wind River’s and GNU.
- Broader target operating system support. MULTI supports all of the operating systems supported by Wind River Workbench: VxWorks 6, Linux, Express Logic’s ThreadX and in-house solutions. In addition, MULTI supports all other popular operating systems: Green Hills Software’s INTEGRITY and velOSity,
VxWorks 5, Enea’s OSE, Windows and Solaris.
- Broader processor support. MULTI supports all of the processors supported by both Wind River Workbench and Tornado and more, including ARC, ARM, Blackfin, ColdFire, M32R, MIPS, Pentium/x86, PowerPC, StrongARM, SuperH, V800, XScale and 15 others.
- Broader third-party tools integration. MULTI is integrated with about 100 different tools from Green Hills Software and its partners to support the complete device software lifecycle across an entire enterprise—including design, development, simulation, integration with new hardware, debugging, testing, performance optimization, resource optimization and configuration management.
Availability and Pricing
Green Hills Software’s DSO support for VxWorks 6 was unveiled on September 13 at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston and will be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2005.
